Laos, officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic, is a mountainous, landlocked country in Southeast Asia. Surrounded by Burma, China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, many Laotians live in rural and hard to access areas that do not have electricity or access to basic facilities. Its economy ranks with the lowest in the world and its human rights record has been poor due to acts of genocide done against the Hmong people. Taught to be patient and accept people, collective work is often an enthusiastic contribution of the whole village. Rich in humor, the Lao are a people with a deeply sensitive culture, with many expressions for the word “heart”. Women are often the sole providers for the family and so the organizations we work with in Laos assist the women in jobs that allow them to stay home.
